HIGHWAYS CRIME of Hindustan Lever Goods-2

(Father Habib flanked by his son Javed Khan (on his right) and Yunis Khan (on his left), the victim of the highways heist

Attn: Mr Ajay Joshi/Mr Ankit Jain of Hindustan Unilever Ltd, Mumbai

Dear Mr Joshi/Jain
Greetings.
In case, you are not the right official to respond, FORWARD this to the Chairman's Office.

Now a few questions to Hindustan Lever:
a) Is it true that your organisation do not go for transit insurance of your items being transported out of your plants to anywhere in India?
b) If Yes, why this risk mitigation step not taken?
c) There seems to be a slew of highway heists of your products particularly from Haridwar plant/Uttarakhand over the past year. True or False?
d) If yes, have you escalated to the government authorities in the respective states: states, I say because stuff from Uttrakhand is being looted in Uttarpradesh highways and unloaded for distribution in Haryana. So an interstate gang seems to be operational.
e) Allegedly, it seems to be the handiwork of some insider within Lever (may be or may not be true) who leaks selective info about trucks moving out with Lever stuff. Any internal investigation done in the past?
f) Lever goods are of high value and therefore, stolen Lever goods cannot be disposed off in the market without the connivance of the wholesale dealer or distirbution network, it is believed. So any thoughts on that? Any investigation on this arena?

Am Delhi based and will be interested in  catching up with heads of supply chain/logistics (because we are talking about transhipment) and vigilance team or any higher ups.
We can do this interaction over phone. Am available on 9711544181.
I would also like to visit your Haridwar plant for an interaction with your logistics team handing transportation.
Kindly NOTE that I do not wish to be approached by your external PR handlers to represent you in this regard.
Kindly advise.
Cheers

HINDUSTAN UNILEVER RESPONDS:

As a responsible company we work closely with our partner agencies to ensure safety of goods and the personnel transporting the goods. The transport operations including transit insurance for finished goods are governed by the mutually agreed terms of trade and the transport pricing is aligned to these terms of trade to ensure it is beneficial for both the parties. In case of any untoward incident we work with the relevant agencies (external and internal) and take suitable action.

  1. Appreciate UNILEVER taking note of Above Blog.
While we understand "Terms of Trade", not taking TRANSIT INSURANCE endangers lives of Drivers since these Materials are most easy to pick and sell, and Thieves have cracked this Loop hole in Unilever Supply Chain.

LEVER now has two option :

SIT and do nothing, till a live of a driver is lost.

    OR.

Check how is it possible to sell UNILEVER Material stolen from HARIDWAR PLANT of approx value Rs.10.00 CR in last 18 months without someone in the System, who is also a Buyer of the material not being Hand in Glove with the Gang?

    Ponder over this.

  2. Don't know, how we can put entire blame on HUL. Why not Transport vendor, who knows very well that insurance of goods in not there ? .... In the end, someone has to ensure insurance of goods, either Consignor or transporter. Else, this blame game will continue till infinity ... This case is not only about HUL goods, but various other commodities also, where goods are stolen on regular basis from Indian highways .... I remember one case where goods worth INR 50 lacs were stolen next to Dhaba near Police Station ... Who to blame ? This situation can't end here. Ultimately, weaker person in the entire supply-chain has to face maximum punishment ... Grand to note that, you are raising such critical issues.

  4. Dear friends,

It's a matter of regret that responsible companies such as HLL has chosen to avoid taking insurance of their consignments and luring the bleeding Indian transporters to take such heavy risks for peanut profits which also is otherwise absent in their normal rates to transporters.
What times do we live in - it's time the legal system wakes up and sits in judgement over such foreign companies who try to make poor transporters and drivers beg for loads and in return for loads are made to sign such atrocious contracts.
The police also not knowing the facts torture the drivers for cargo theft. All responsible transporters should stop lifting HLL materials which are not insured. We now have good Indian companies manufacturing similar products and it is our duty to promote these.
